Brand identity is no longer about a static and isolated brand marque that appears on the top right of letterheads and brochures. Any modern, dynamic branding system must now embrace highly digital and environmental applications – and this could not be truer than for the Olympics. In five years time we’ll be viewing the identity on mobile phones, mobile TV and living signage and not as a static two-dimensional graphic. As an avatar-style graphic it lends itself to animation, flexible application and adoption by its young target audience.

Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

SEO in Plain English

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the process of arranging the content and relationship of a given website in such a way as to maximize the way search engines perceive the site when a user performs a search using certain key words and phrases.

There are several things to bear in mind when creating the SEO strategy for a given site:

A guaranteed ranking or page position within a given search engine is 100% impossible to guarantee.

Careful planning and research combined with realistic targeted objectives can almost always yield real results

Continuous monitoring and adapting of the sites SEO is vital. Think of it this way. You SEO a site and gain top position in Google. If you do nothing and a competitor changes his SEO you will loose your position to him eventually.

Many many larger companies who should know better neglect their SEO. This means it is actually possible to “steel” a competitors ranking and they will not notice for some time. Then they must play catchup. This gives the small agile firm willing to keep on top of the SEO a much larger chance of good results than might at first be thought when competing with “the big boys”.

Many sites make the basic mistake of thinking all they need to do is create a page or two with lists of keywords and that will do it. Wrong!. Most modern search engines employ extremely sophisticated Artificial Intelligence routines combined with Language Awareness to spot such brash attempts to fool them. Most will not only not be fooled they will actively lower your ranking as “punishment” some offenses will get a site dropped all together.

Effective SEO is not just about the web site. Getting a good search engine placement revolves around knowing where to maximize both effort and finances. It is entirely possible to spend hundreds of thousands on expensive keywords and so called experts. The results however, usually, do not even pay the costs — or if they do it takes an excessive amount of time to do so. The key is to research first, find what works for the competition and then find ways to use that to your advantage. Find a “backdoor”.

Beware the so called “Black hat” SEO “experts”. Using ideas and concepts that are obviously immoral or “against the game” will simply get you banned. Yes Banned! From the worlds search engines. They are accountable to no one, they make the rules. Play by them and profit — break them and …

Should Photoshop Come With Disclaimer?

It seems like even Photoshop isn’t safe from our mad world these days, with politicians in the UK and France calling for legislation to regulate digital retouching, tucking, and smoothing of images in ads and other advertisements.

The reasoning behind this madness is to police fantasy Photoshopping - as is all too usual in such cases - to protect those delicate flowers: impressionable youth.

Admiration for Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs. It’s possible you may not have heard of the man — You will have noticed him though. He co-founded Apple Computers in the late 60’s, gave the world the iPod, Pixar, the iPhone and the modern GUI.

But what of the man himself ? Today I am writing this not because of the amazing modern designs, gadgets and world changing idioms that he has give us all. No, today this is a very personal note of respect and admiration for Mr Jobs.

You see, he was diagnosed with cancer some 2 years ago and recently underwent a liver transplant as a result. After going through this life changing event he then appears at a key Apple conference urging the audience to become organ donors.

I too suffer from a serious liver condition that may one day also require a transplant for me to go on. To know one is suffering from such a condition and to then refuse to lie down and give up demands respect. To actively use the opportunity to further the cause in order to selflessly help others you do not even know is truly the mark of a great Man. Steve Jobs.

Whilst looking through the Worth1000 website I came across a Photoshop competition where artists were asked to imagine that the renaissance period in art with the monsters.
There’s some pretty freaky works submitted, and a lot of them are very good! One of my favorites was this scary looking Mona Lisa below (Scary Lisa). There’s also Mona Satan and another scary Mona Lisa.

Dirty Car Art

For those that live on a dirt road and are tired of washing your car, why not take advantage of the situation and make art out of your dirty windscreens? That’s what the artist Scott Wade did. He evolved from writing things like “wash me”, to smiley faces, to intricately detailed portraits and copies of famous paintings.

The artist has his own website and has plans to publish a book when he gets enough pictures together. There’s also a video of the artist at work on a Mazda 3 owned by his wife.
